I looked at the body still lying there. The ground was covered in a thin layer of pale reddish-brown gravel with paler dirt showing through. Some of them were too tall for the skins so that a loot or more of bare leg showed below the animal feet, or out of the clawed arms. I wondered if Lieutenant Marks was here.
If I hadn't had three vampire marks on me, I'd have had at least a broken jaw, or maybe a broken neck. It was a start. tougher, I think. I took the compliment because that's what it was, maybe the best compliment he'd ever given a woman.
